Best Xbox 360 One Hand Solution to date

Jeff Humm recently bought a One Hand Controller from me, but struggled with the shoulder buttons (marked on the PS2 controller as L1, L2, R1 and R2). He tracked down a nice solution for his Xbox 360 for an extra £60 approx. on top of the price of the controller.

The hardware needed is: One One Handed Controller from me at OneSwitch for £55 plus postage (also easily available from eBay). A PS2 to Xbox 360 adapter from eBay (as pictured above) for about £11. An XCM Re-Mapper device from eBay which are currently going for about £50. There's no need to connect an official Xbox 360 JoyPad with this set-up either, which is a boon. You can do the same with PS3 as seen in this SpecialEffect video using the XCM Swapper.

With this set-up you can move the controls around to make a more comfortable/possible one-handed playing arrangement. If only all games allowed you to reconfigure controls from the off, Jeff could have saved himself £60. So many disabled gamers are penalised in this way. Seems unfair to me.

The video above shows the LEPMIS prototype ORTHROS one-handed controller. Compatible with PS3, Xbox 360 or PC, it's great to see new one-handed solutions coming out.

PS3 One Handed Controller Attachment

The 'Biotic Controller' above is a brace for a standard Playstation Dual Shock controller that makes one-handed play a possibility. I've seen a few controllers built in a similar way across the years, but this one is the most professional looking.

Why was it made? "My dad made this attachment so that my brother could aim and throw tactical nades!!" according to the video notes.

Orthros Joystick

"This video demonstrates a one handed controller that provides all of the functionality of the standard PS3 handset, but accessible by persons with only one hand. The one in this video is the first functional prototype.

The design is such that it can be used by left or right handed people, as in the final version, a switch on the back will swap the "shape" buttons from left to right, and the system buttons from right to left.
The bottom joystick is currently the [traditional left thumb-stick].... as I move the handset around, the ["thumb-stick"] moves under it.

At the moment there are 17 3.5mm jack outputs and two 9way "D" type outputs for the analogue joysticks. These will all plug into the LEPMIS PS3-SAP (Switch Access Pod). The advantage of this is that you can re-configure all of the switches, and swap the joystick around, as you see fit, to suit your particular needs of game requirements.

If you can't manage all of the functions, leave some of the functions un-plugged and use different switches or joystick for those functions. You could use the tilt sensor joystick SAP-TAS with your head for one of the joystick for example

One Handed Gaming

Hardware Hacker "Hasse" modified a GameCube controller for his disabled brother, so he could play GameCube games on his Wii one-handed. It's a really clever modification, with tilt-sensor and very helpful guide-lights.

There is an alternative solution out there for the lay-person, although it of course will cost more money. Connect one of a range of Playstation 2 one-handed controllers to the Wii/GameCube using an adapter. Simples.

Super Robot Wars Controllers - Back In Stock

I have a small batch of one-handed HORI Super Robot Wars controllers back in stock again.

These are Playstation 2 controllers, but using an easy to connect adapter, can be used on many other games machines too. You can see alternative one-handed controllers over at the Accessible Gaming Shop's One Handed area.
