Space Invaders (1978)

The oldest game on the Replay SpecialEffect stand is planned to be the legendary Taito Space Invaders. This version will be made one-switch accessible, including putting in the money, selecting a one-player game and playing.


The game will only work in this way by using an old version of MAME (v0.92), the 4Noah utility and MAME cheats (v0.81). You need to own the Space Invaders PCB too to play this legally. I did contemplate bringing my cocktail Space Invaders, but I don't think my Car's suspension could cope. Here's an idea of how it will play.

And three years later, I've added the Commodore PET to the ATE Arcade. The WinVICE emulator gives retro-heads the ability to play one of the first fully one-button playable games in the form of the morally dubious "Air Attack" from 1979.

A Day Down the Arcades

Whacka-Monty-Mole programmers, Trevor (Smila) Storey and Stuart Collier, are currently building a fully featured amusement arcade. It's planned to have video games, pinball, fruit-machines, a pool table, air-hockey, juke-box, shove-a-penny machines and more. It's a massive undertaking, but they seem to be well up to the job, looking at their supporting web-site.

They've even hinted that one or two of the games may be made switch accessible, which I keep my fingers crossed for. Meanwhile, here's some links... Switch Arcade Classics, the A.T.E. Arcade (W.I.P.) and AbleGames 2009.

Too many links and too little time to do them justice, so here's another lucky dip for games:

Xbox 360 Indie Arcade shoot-em-ups at XNplay, including the about to be highly accessible Shoot 1UP (speed control, one-switch option, high-contrast options, reconfigurable controls).

Partially one-switch accessible NeoGeo Bowling with a nice multi-player mode at Classic Games Arcade. On-line emulators are no where near as versatile for access as an off-line version, but they're a very quick way to get at the games.

Virtual Atari is another on-line emulator of the much loved Atari VCS. Includes one of my all time favourite games Superman. See the ATE Arcade for off-line versions.
